ARTICLE·FRIENDS·April 2026

The best friendships can go years without a genuinely new conversation.

Not because you've run out of things to say. Because "how's work?" and "anything new?" have become the grooves you always fall into, and neither of you quite knows how to step out of them.

A good question helps. Not a therapy question — a real one. The kind you'd actually want to answer.

Eight questions worth asking

  1. What's something you've wanted to tell me but haven't?
  2. What's the most useful thing someone has ever said to you?
  3. What are you most proud of that you don't talk about?
  4. What's a belief you've changed your mind on in the last few years?
  5. What's something you've given up on — and do you miss it?
  6. When do you feel most like yourself around me?
  7. What are you carrying right now that I don't fully know about?
  8. What's something that's been harder than you let on?
